Allon is now retired after decades as a journalist, including 31 years as a Knesset reporter, 17 at Haaretz and 14 at Israel Hayom, where he was a member of staff from the paper's founding.
"Allon followed political struggles with uniquely in-depth writing, covered the Knesset plenum and parliamentary activity, and what was happening behind the scenes of the parliament," the prize committee wrote.
Gideon Allon began his path in journalism in 1960, writing for Maariv's youth newspaper. In the 1970s, he hosted the radio program "Shirim ve'shearim." Prior to being assigned the Knesset beat, he covered legal affairs, aliyah and absorption, the President's Residence, and Jerusalem municipal affairs.
Allon is the author of three books: one on the law to hold direct elections for prime minister published in 1995; one on the battles doctors in Israel's public healthcare system are waging to change their status, published in 2009, and a third summing up 40 years of his work as a journalist.
