Dong Jingwei, formerly vice minister of State Security and head of counterintelligence for the Chinese Ministry of State Security since 2018, reportedly secretly flew from Hong Kong to the US on Feb. 10 along with his adult daughter.
reports on Chinese-language anti-communist media and Twitter accounts claim that the information Dong provided about the Wuhan Institute of Virology may have changed US President Joe Biden's stance about where the pandemic started. Biden in May ordered a US intelligence inquiry into the origins of the pandemic, including the possibility that the virus started with an accidental leak from the Wuhan lab.
If the rumors turn out to be true, Dong would be the highest-level defector ever from China.
