Hamas received a tailwind of support from Tehran on Monday night as Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh that the Islamic republic "stands behind the Palestinian struggle."

Speaking on the phone, the Iranian foreign minister also conveyed his country's "solidarity with the Palestinian struggle" and that he "condemns the Zionist aggression supported by the United States."
Gaza Strip-based terrorist groups had fired over 200 rockets into Israel since Monday night, wounding six Israelis.
Zarif also told the Hamas leader that he spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and discussed with him the possibility of acting against Israel through international bodies and the United Nations General Assembly.
Cavusoglu also discussed the issue with his counterparts in Algeria, Pakistan and Russia.
The phone call indicates a significant rapprochement between Hamas and Iran, after their relations were severed due to Hamas' support for insurgents in Syria. Tehran bolstered its ties with Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which similar to Hamas is based in Gaza, but has recently moved toward open reconciliation with Hamas.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meanwhile, spoke on the phone with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, telling him that "Turkey will do all it can to enlist the world to fight the occupation and Israel's terror."
Thousands of people gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Ankara and its consulate in Istanbul to protest the Jewish state.
Despite a full lockdown aimed at curbing coronavirus cases, the protesters in Istanbul, including Syrians and Palestinians, carried Palestinian flags while chanting, "(Turkish soldiers) to Gaza" and "Down with Israel, down with America."
Erdogan also spoke by phone with King Abdullah of Jordan, Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah, as well as with Haniyeh.
According to a statement from his office, Erdogan told Abdullah that the "inhumane" attacks against Palestinians were aimed at all Muslims, adding that Turkey and Jordan needed to work together to stop them.
