The prize is conferred by the B'nai B'rith World Center and is considered the leading recognition in Israel when it comes to Diaspora Jewry and Diaspora-Israel relations.
In an announcement, the organization said that Lavie had covered the Jewish communities' unique way of coping with the ongoing pandemic, along with other challenges.
"Lavie published more than 20 articles that appeared in both Hebrew and English on challenges faced by Diaspora communities, including the COVID-19 crisis. This is the first time Israel Hayom has received the award," the organization said in a statement.
A few years ago, Lavie, a lecturer and teacher by profession, won a Pratt award for media.
Lavie's current project involves a series of long-form articles that address a few core issues of how the pandemic has affected the Jewish world.
The project discusses matters of Jewish education and identity, philanthropy during times of crisis, trends in antisemitism, as well as a reshaping of the character of Diaspora communities and changes in the Orthodox stream of Judaism.
Israel Hayom Editor-in-Chief Boaz Bismuth congratulated Lavie on winning this prize. "Israel Hayom believes in empowering its reporters and giving them the freedom to inform readers on the most important and high-quality matters," Bismuth said. "Dan Lavie is a great example of high-quality and excellence. I have no doubt that he will be a role model for other writers."
