French Jews took to the streets of Paris on Sunday to protest a recent court decision that prevented a trial for the suspected killer of Sarah Halimi, a Jewish woman who was allegedly brutally killed by her neighbor Kabili Troare in 2018.

The decision from early April, in which the court said Troare could not face trial because of his mental state during the crime owing to drugs he had taken earlier, has led to an outcry among Jews in France and around the world.
Despite the coronavirus restrictions, the demonstration was granted a permit by local authorities. In a message ahead of the protest, the Jewish community said: "We call on all concerned citizens who want to seek out the truth and fight anti-Semitism to join us so that we can express our opinions on this decision, which is based on law but not on justice. We will express solidarity with the Halimi family and show our determination to continue the struggle."
French parliament member Meyer Habib, a prominent Jewish lawmaker who also represents French Jews in Israel, said that "the killer will soon be a free man and if we can't have a trial in France, let's have it in Israel. Although the cases are not the same, let's not forget that Israel went all the way to Argentina so that it could capture Adolf Eichmann [a senior Nazi figure during the Holocaust] and put him on trial. Sarah Halimi deserves to have her killer tried and punished."
