Chabad houses in the US, London, and Mexico have been fitted out air purifiers effective against the COVID virus as part of their preparations to host worshippers and visitors over Passover.

The air purifiers, developed by Israeli startup Aura Air, were flown out of Israel and installed in Chabad synagogues and dining halls to help mitigate the spread of the virus.

Aura Air's device filters the air in closed spaces using four stages of filtration and unique technologies. A study conducted at Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer determined that the system is able to eliminate 99.97% of different viruses and bacteria. The device's mechanism is based on artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that compare indoor air quality to the outdoors, detecting changes in its quality and treating the air accordingly.

If the system detects hazardous gases, the user is notified by a dedicated app so they can address the problem. The air purifiers are already in use in government buildings, sports facilites, dining and entertainment venues, schools, hospitals, hotels, and public transportation units worldwide.

Chabad purchased the devices with money from donations by Chabad members who chose to honor deceased relatives by making Chabad houses safe for visitors.

CEO of Aura Air in North American Roei Friedberg, who spearheaded the operation, said that the air purifiers were installed in areas that were seeing especially high COVID morbidity rates.

"Unlike the 'end of the pandemic' atmosphere we have in Israel, they still suffer from the continuous spread of COVID-19, with high numbers of infections and deaths in those countries. Therefore, the leaders of those communities were looking for a solution that will allow them to host the holidays together in a safe and healthy environment. We intend to extend the cooperation with synagogues, yeshivas, and other educational institutions of the Jewish communities abroad further," Friedberg said.
