Pasternak is most well-known for his literary masterpiece Doctor Zhivago, for which he received a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1958. The novel has been translated into many languages and adapted into a film starring Egyptian actor Omar Sharif and British actress Julie Christie.
Doctor Zhivago is partially based on Pasternak's life and describes the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. For many years it was banned in the Soviet Union for its message of personal liberty.
