The very ceremony in which presidential power is transferred, a hallowed American democratic tradition, will serve as a jarring reminder of the challenges Biden faces: The inauguration unfolds at a US Capitol battered by an insurrectionist siege just two weeks ago, encircled by security forces evocative of those in a war zone, and devoid of crowds because of the threat of the coronavirus pandemic.
Also, for the first time in modern history, Biden's predecessor, President Donald Trump will not attend the inauguration – something that last happened in 1869. He departed Washington on Wednesday morning, hours ahead of the inauguration, rather than accompany his successor to the Capitol.
Still reeling from the Capitol riots, security in Washington was unprecedented. Clusters of soldiers in full battle fatigues were deployed along the between the US Capitol and the White House as were metal barriers, erected to restrict access to the procession route.

Traffic has been blocked off nearby in all directions. Revelers have been told to stay home to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Most offices in the surrounding buildings are closed, many boarded up with plywood to prevent damage in case violence breaks out again Wednesday.
Details of the inauguration ceremony released by the White House noted that Father Leo J. O'Donovan led the invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by Andrea Hall, and the national anthem was performed by Lady Gaga.
The ceremony also included a poetry reading by Amanda Gorman and a musical performance by Jennifer Lopez.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, Biden, who prior to it celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, was slated to lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, President George W. Bush and Laura Bush and President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton.
The Bidens would then receive a presidential military escort to the White House.
