New Hope leader Gideon Sa'ar, a key rival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Monday that the country's prime ministers must not remain in office for more than eight years.
Speaking at an event at the Israel Democracy Institute, the former minister pledged that an appropriate law would be the first a Sa'ar-led coalition would pass.

Netanyahu's rival also said mayoral terms should be limited to two terms as well and that he believes in empowering local leaders over a centralized power structure.
Also Monday, Eilat Mayor Meir Yitzhak Halevi, who has been in office since 2003, announced he was quitting Likud to join New Hope.
A similar announcement came from Ashdod Deputy Mayor Gabi Knafo, another member of Netanyahu's Likud.

While trailing behind Likud in polls, New Hope still appears poised to create a considerable threat to the PM, with some of the surveys projecting it to be the second-largest party in the Knesset.
