Likud MK David Bitan's condition deteriorated on Monday, two days after being hospitalized due to COVID-19 and a week after being diagnosed as a carrier of the novel coronavirus.

Bitan is now considered in stable but serious condition, and he has been receiving respiratory support.Bitan was until recently one of the most influential politicians in Israeli politics while serving as coalition whip and a close confidante of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but in recent month he has repeatedly voiced criticism at Netanyahu and the governing party.
Bitan is facing corruption allegations dating to his pre-Knesset days as a municipal official. An indictment is pending a final hearing in which he could present his defense.
