Netanyahu reportedly believes that under the current political circumstances and given rising coronavirus morbidity, which may require the government to impose a third lockdown, it is too soon to make this decision, a confidant of the prime minister's said.
A senior Likud official said that the party is still trying to reach a compromise with national unity government partner Blue and White, but noted the coalition's chances of weathering the current political crisis are slim.
The parties are at odds even on the question of which committee should draft the bill for the dissolution of the Knesset – the House Committee or the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee – and when to hold the next elections – March, May or June.
Blue and White controls the House Committee and wants it to debate the issue, while Likud demands the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, controlled by political ally United Torah Judaism, be the forum in which the matter is discussed.
