Authorities in the Negev, Galilee and the social periphery have been invited to submit requests to receive the equipment and systems at no cost to them, saving them millions of shekels, as part of a public request for proposals published by the ministry.
Among the systems are smart waste removal, which would save 30% of waste removal costs; the installment of solar panels on roofs of public buildings, which will allow independent electricity generation and selling it back to the Israel Electric Company; and installment of energy-saving street lighting, which will increase savings and promote energetic and economic efficiency.

Ariel Mishal, the director-general of the Development of the Periphery, Negev and the Galilee Ministry, says that as of today, the cost of waste removal at a municipality is between NIS 3-8 million a year. The smart removal system, which combines sensors and volume detectors, will allow for the municipality to know how much waste is in each city. According to him, a municipality that installs two of the three systems (waste, lighting and solar panels) could reach savings of up to NIS 1 million a year.
