The Hula Valley is a popular destination among Israelis during bird migration season as the valley is a major stopover for birds migrating through here from Europe en route to Ethiopia's Lake Tana.
Some 500 million migrating birds of 390 species pass through here every year. This year, however, some of the 100,000 cranes flew in a little late.

"Bird migration is nature's clock. Every year it is similar," said Yaron Charka, chief ornithologist for the Jewish National Fund, the organization that runs the site. "We can't know for sure why some birds migrated late. It is most likely due to climate change," Charka said.
Israelis take advantage of this opportunity as traveling had been restricted for months. The country is only beginning to emerge from its second national coronavirus lockdown last month.
"A crazy amount of people just want to go out, to be in nature, to see the birds, to breathe. It's healing," said Inbar Shlomit Rubin, content and instructors' manager at the Hula nature reserve.
