Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem died Monday at the age of 79, Syrian state media reported, without citing the cause of death.

Muallem was also the deputy prime minister of Syria, according to SANA. He served as Syria's ambassador to the United States from 1990 to 1999 and was appointed the foreign minister in 2006.
He was widely considered as Syrian President Bashar Assad's top confidantes.
