"I told him of my determination to work for peace in the Middle East," Macron said.
After Israel and the United Arab Emirates announced a historic normalization of bilateral ties on Thursday, Abbas denounced the accord in a statement saying, "The Palestinian leadership rejects and denounces the UAE, Israeli and US trilateral, surprising, announcement."
Senior Abbas aide Nabil Abu Rudeineh said the deal was a "betrayal of Jerusalem, Al-Aqsa and the Palestinian cause."
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video message Sunday that "According to the Palestinians, and to many others in the world who agreed with them, peace can't be reached without conceding to the Palestinians' demands, including uprooting settlements, dividing Jerusalem and withdrawal to 1967 lines. No more. This concept of 'peace through withdrawal and weakness' has passed from the world."
Rudeineh said in response that "Peace should be established on the basis of the Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital. This is the Arab and international consensus and anything else has no value."
