Another nine Israelis have died of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's death toll from the virus to 622 since the start of the epidemic, the Corona National Knowledge and Information Center reported Wednesday.

On Wednesday, there were 24,699 symptomatic carriers in Israel, an increase of 285 from previous 24-hour period.

From midnight Monday to midnight Tuesday, a total of 25,401 coronavirus tests were processed, 1,785 (7%) turned out positive.

Israelis age 60 and over, who because of their age are at high risk from the virus, comprised under 10% of all confirmed coronavirus cases in Israel. The virus is currently most prevalent among Israelis ages 20-39, who make up over 30% of the confirmed cases, followed by children and teens age 0-19.

Jerusalem had been coded a "red" city because of the continual rise in the number of confirmed cases among its residents.

Israel's national coronavirus coordinator Professor Ronni Gamzu said Wednesday while visiting the Jerusalem Municipality that "Any city with numbers like these should have been shut down already."

"Your job is to get control of the corona numbers in the most complex city in Israel," Gamzu told city officials.

Other cities and towns coded red include Bnei Brak, Modi'in Illit, Beit Shemesh, and Elad, as well as Yarka, Dir al-Asad, Ilut, Ein Naqquba, Kfar HaOranim, Hurfeish, Kafr Bara, and Sha'ab.
