The Lebanese government has declared a two-week state of emergency in Beirut, following Tuesday's catastrophic explosion in the Port of Beirut, state media reported.
The blast, believed to be the result of over 2,750 ton of ammonium nitrate igniting, decimated the harbor, killing at least 135 people and leaving over 5,000 others injured. Officials expect the death toll will rise.
Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said Wednesday the "apocalyptic situation" has left an estimated 300,000 people homeless.
