The UN peacekeeping mission known as UNIFIL said on Wednesday that it will open an investigation into an attempted terrorist attack by the Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah on Monday.
In the incident, "[three to five] Hezbollah terrorists crossed a few feet into Israeli territory" in an effort to carry out a large-scale terrorist attack.

"IDF troops thwarted an infiltration attempt by a Hezbollah terror squad in the Mount Dov area. No injuries to IDF troops were reported," an IDF statement added.
The incident led to a heavy exchange of fire.
In order "to determine the facts and circumstances" of the recent incident across the Blue Line (a border demarcation between Lebanon and Israel), the UN peacekeeping mission has ordered a probe into Monday's military exchange.
The statement added that UNIFIL commander Stefano Del Col would continue mediating between the parties "to contain the situation, decrease tension, and preserve cessation of hostilities."
Tensions have rapidly escalated between Israel and the terrorist organization since the death of Hezbollah operative Ali Kamel Mohsen Jawad, along with two other terrorists, during an airstrike on Damascus International Airport earlier this month.

Hezbollah has vowed revenge for Jawad's death, leading the IDF to move reinforcements to the northern border in preparation for an attack by the Shiite terror organization.
The IDF was still on high alert along the northern border as of Thursday morning in the assumption that Hezbollah will try carrying out another attack.
UNIFIL's mission is up for renewal when its mandate expires Aug. 31. Israel and the US are pressing for major changes in the way it operates on the ground to combat what they say is the spread of illegal arms to Hezbollah-dominated southern Lebanon.
The force has been deployed in southern Lebanon since 1978.
