The Iranian, identified as Seyed Mahmoud Mousavi Majd, is accused of leaking information on the movements and security detail of Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force commander Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani to foreign intelligence services.

US intelligence had reportedly tracked him all the way from Damascus and received reports from local informants that he was departing. Soleimani was then killed in a US drone strike shortly after landing in Baghdad on January 3. His motorcade was targeted.

According to NBC News, Israeli intelligence was used in the strike to confirm the details, but Jerusalem has strongly denied it played any role in Soleimani's death.
After the attack, Iran retaliated with a ballistic missile barrage aimed at an Iraqi base hosting US troops. The assault resulted in zero fatalities, but dozens of troops were injured.
