An IDF lieutenant colonel who was seriously wounded during a training exercise at the Tze'elim Base in southern Israel on Wednesday evening was in stable condition and breathing on his own at the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba Thursday morning.
The officer was apparently caught in a crossfire. He sustained a bullet wound to the abdomen as well as shrapnel to one of his shoulders. Medics raced to the scene, administered first aid, and determined that the extent of his wounds required him to be evacuated to a hospital as soon as possible.

He was then airlifted to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba by the Israeli Air Force's 669 Search and Rescue Unit.
The accident occurred during a drill held as part of a course to train NCO company commanders using a new urban warfare model facility recently erected on the base. The model can be used by the smallest units or by a company, which in the IDF includes 100-250 troops, and is reportedly considered an "easy" one.
The Military Police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the course of events that led to the accident.
