But now Sanders, who volunteered in a kibbutz in northern Israel several decades ago, is now brandishing his heritage as the party prepares for the major contests in Nevada, South Carolina, and of course, more than a dozen key states on Super Tuesday.
In a video released by the campaign, Sanders says he wants to be "the first Jewish president in the history of this country."
He then goes on to attack the current White House occupant, President Donald Trump, for not being tough on anti-Semites and for making controversial statements on Jewish success.
I'm very proud to be Jewish and I look forward to becoming the first Jewish president in the history of this country. pic.twitter.com/UOPvEomHNE
