The European Union came under heavy criticism from the Israeli Foreign Ministry on Tuesday after it condemned Jerusalem's plans to apply Israeli law in Judea and Samaria as part of US President Donald Trump's peace plan for the Middle East.

"The fact that the High Representative of the EU Josep Borrell chose to use threatening language towards Israel, so shortly after he assumed office & only hours after his meetings in Iran, is regrettable &, to say the least, odd," Israeli Foreign Ministry Director General Lior Haiat tweeted. "Pursuing such policies & conduct is the best way to ensure that the EU's role in any process will be minimized," he said.
The angry tweets came after Borrell said steps by Israel to annex territory, "if implemented, could not pass unchallenged." Borrell also said that "to build a just and lasting peace, the unresolved final status issues must be decided through direct negotiations between both parties."
Borrell added that Trump's plan departs from "internationally agreed parameters."
The peace plan, announced by Trump last week with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his side, was rejected outright by the Palestinians. It would give Israel most of what it has sought during decades of conflict and would let Israel extend its sovereignty over about 30% of Judea and Samaria, including the Jordan Valley and all Jewish communities.
