Heart-related illnesses and cancer are the leading causes of death in Israel, the Central Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday in a new report.

In the report, the agency said that in 2017 more than 25% of deaths were caused by malignant tumors while about 23% of deaths were due to disease related to the heart or the vascular system.
Infectious diseases were responsible for 5.6% percent of the deaths, whereas diabetes led to 5.2% of deaths. Strokes were responsible for 4.7% of the health-related fatalities.
The leading cause of death for both women and men was cancer: 25% of deaths for both sexes. Heart disease was the next leading cause of death for both sexes, causing 15.6% of men's fatalities and 13.9% of women's fatalities.
Some 82% of health-related fatalities in 2017 were in cases where the person was over 65 years old, the report shows.
