The Associated Press deleted and corrected a tweet that suggested the Palestinian terrorist group Black September carried out guerrilla warfare when it massacred 11 Israeli athletes in the Munich 1972 Olympic Games.

The terrorist attack, which was perpetrated by a faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization, was a traumatic experience for many Israelis, particularly because it took place on German soil, where authorities were unprepared for handling a hostage situation of this nature and were unwilling to let Israel intervene.
The sight of Jews once again being helpless in Europe, with Israeli troops being denied access, scarred the entire nation and many sought revenge. This was ultimately exacted when the masterminds were assassinated by the Israeli Mossad.
"#OTD [on this day] in 1972, the Palestinian group Black September attacked the Israeli Olympic delegation...", the controversial tweet, dated Sept. 5, said. "11 Israelis, five guerrillas and a police officer were killed in the resulting siege," it continued.
The tweet drew outrage, and on Saturday The Associated Press deleted the tweet and published a new one, along with the following clarification: "The AP has deleted a tweet about the massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics because it was unclear about who was responsible for the killings and referred to the attackers as guerrillas. A new tweet will be sent shortly."
