London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called on the Westminster Council to back plans to construct a Holocaust memorial in Victoria Tower Gardens despite opponents lamenting that the proposal would be in the wrong location and block views of the historic park, which is a UNESCO world heritage site.

In a letter he wrote to the council, Khan stressed that the memorial would "make a powerful national statement" in light of the spike in anti-Semitic incidents in the United Kingdom.
"I urge Westminster City Council not to reject these plans and instead enable this hugely important national memorial to take its rightful place in the heart of the capital and close to the seat of the national government," Khan wrote on Monday.
The plan has been criticized by UNESCO and other groups. Officials have warned that the building was likely to obstruct the view of the gardens and opponents said that a new location should be found.
The memorial plan is expected to be rejected.
