Belgium's Jewish community is in an uproar after a Belgian journalist wrote an article that referred to Jews as "ugly," dismissed the Jewish concept of chosenness, and accused Israel of "murdering" thousands of Palestinians.
A police complaint was filed against a Belgian columnist Dimitri Verhulst over a July 27 article in the Belgian daily De Morgen, is which he stated that "Being Jewish is not a religion, no God would give creatures such an ugly nose."

Verhulst misquoted former French-Jewish singer Serge Gainsbourg who said, "Being Jewish is not a religion. No religion makes you grow such a nose."
He also said that "because God has His favorites and they have their privileges, Palestinians were driven out of their homes in 1948 to make place for God's favorites," and went on to claim that Israel has "murdered" 10,000 Palestinians since 2000 and that "talking to the Chosen is difficult."
According to the Algemeiner, the umbrella Jewish organization of the Flemish region of Belgium called these claims "rabid anti-Semitism" and has filed a police complaint against Verhulst.
Chief Rabbi of the Netherlands Binyomin Jacobs also called the statements "pure anti-Semitism," and professed concern that they were published in a respected daily.
