A Turkish national allegedly behind an arson attempt aboard a cargo ship in Israel's Haifa bay on Sunday will be deported back to his home country.
The 45-year-old suspect was reportedly en route to Europe as a stowaway when he realized he was in the wrong location and decided to set a fire on the ship to divert attention in order to avert capture by Israeli authorities.
Israel's Channel 12 News also reported that the suspect has a record of illegal entry into Israel.
Israeli naval and police forces seized control of the MSC Canberra, a cargo ship sailing from Turkey under a Panamanian flag, after a distress call suggested that unidentified individuals on board had threatened to set it on fire and usurp control of the vessel.
The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said no casualties were reported in the highly unusual incident, which is not believed to have been terror-related.
According to available details, the MSC Canberra departed Mersin, a port city in southern Turkey, around noon on Friday, and was expected to arrive in Haifa on Saturday, before making its way to the Ashdod Port in southern Israel.
