Political ads that run on Facebook will be labeled as such to prevent foreign intervention in Israeli elections, representatives of the social media giant announced Monday.
Officials from Facebook and the platform's Israeli branch held a meeting Monday with Central Election Committee Chairman Justice Hanan Melcer and Central Election Committee Director Orly Ades, in which the Facebook representatives said that starting in March, they would demand that political ads that run on the social network be clearly labeled as such.
Those publishing political ads will be required to go through the standard authorization process for buying ads on Facebook. The company will save them in a library accessible to the public for a period of seven years.
In addition, foreign entities will not be allowed to buy or run political ads for Israeli elections.
The decision comes after Ades said in a meeting of the Central Election Committee on Sunday that committee members were "aware that social media sites could be used inappropriately to influence the voting public."
