The Bank of Israel is pressuring Israeli businesses to adopt the necessary technology for Google Pay, the internet giant's online payment app.
Israeli officials who have been in contact with the American company believe the Israeli version of Google Pay will be launched by the end of the year.
As a first stage, the app will allow Israelis to shop online using their Google accounts and at a later stage they would be able to use the app for payment at brick-and-mortar stores.
To streamline this transition, Israeli businesses have been encouraged by authorities to introduce contactless readers that would allow consumers to pay by tapping their phone.
