Israeli aircraft struck two underground structures in the Gaza Strip belonging to Hamas late Saturday night after a rocket fired from the coastal enclave fell in an open area in southern Israel. There were no reports of injuries. No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the attack.
"Hamas is responsible for all events that transpire in the Gaza Strip and emanate from it," the IDF said in a statement, adding that troops opened fire in response to grenade and rock attacks and breaches of the border fence.
Earlier Saturday, hundreds of Palestinians attended the funeral of a woman killed by Israeli forces on Friday during the violent border demonstration.
Amal al-Taramsi, a 43-year-old activist who had regularly attended the weekly protests, was around 200 meters (yards) from the fence when she was shot in the head, a Palestinian human rights group said.
Israel accuses Hamas of using the protests, which have been a weekly event since March 2018, as cover for attacks against Israeli forces and communities and says it only uses force to defend its border.
The IDF said some 13,000 people took part in Friday's demonstrations, with a few protesters briefly crossing into Israel through breaches in the fence, then returning to Gaza.
Egyptian mediators have visited Gaza in recent days to try and shore up a two-month-old cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
On Friday, two senior Egyptian security officials left the territory after meeting with officials from Hamas and other factions. Participants said they discussed Cairo-led efforts reduce border tensions between Israel and Hamas and reconcile Hamas with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
A Palestinian official said Egypt's message was that Israel sought no escalation.
"Factions here are also committed to calm, as long as the Israeli occupation abides by it," the official said.
Israel has allowed Qatar to deliver $15 million in aid each month since November to pay the salaries of Hamas civil servants. The latest transfer was delayed after a rocket attack earlier this month, but is widely expected to be delivered if the situation remains calm. The weekly protests, which topped out at tens of thousands of demonstrators and near-weekly casualties for the Palestinian side when they were at their peak, have been relatively subdued since the understandings were reached.
The IDF also reported that troops shot a Palestinian man who was attempting to carry out a stabbing attack on Saturday. The suspect was detained and taken for medical treatment.
