Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan has come out against what he calls the "broken balance between the judicial system and elected officials."
In an interview with Israel Hayom that will appear in full on Friday, Erdan said, "[Former Supreme Court] Justice Aharon Barak just recently spoke in a shocking manner. He turned to his 'justice brothers' and said they need to act. He led a legal revolution that we see in the courts' excessive intervention in the decisions of elected officials to this day. That is the big and central issue that we have not dealt with sufficiently, not in terms of punishment but in terms of the Knesset's democratic decisions.
According to Erdan, "The legal system has intervened and blocked legislative initiatives, like the nation-state law, the illegal infiltrators law. The intervention in the decision not to allow [BDS proponent] Lara Alqasem to enter Israel."
He said, "We must not add a party to the coalition that will not sign off in advance on its support for these legislative initiatives to return the power to elected officials to realize the will of the voters, and will not continue this process of transferring authorities to unelected legal entities."
