An Israeli sitcom about an interracial family won an International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series on Monday night.
"Nevsu," which aired on Israel's Channel 13, bested hits from Mexico, Spain and Canada to take the top prize at the ceremony, held in New York, Monday.
Star and co-creator Yossi Vasa and co-creator Shai Ben-Atar accepted the award.
"Nevsu," ("sweetheart" in Amharic slang) tells the story of Gili, an Ethiopian Israeli man who is married to Tamar, an Ashkenazi Jewish woman, and the relationship between their families. The show confronts many social prejudices and tensions pertaining to interracial relationships in Israel.
The show premiered in March 2017 and has so far aired for two seasons, each with seven episodes. Channel 13 has ordered a third season, which is scheduled to air next year.
Nevsu is the second Israeli sitcom to win the International Emmy Award. In 2010, "Traffic Light," co-created by comedian Adir Miller and writer Ran Sarig, won in this category. An American version of the show was later produced by Fox.
Another production, a Dutch film about Israeli author Etgar Keret, won the award for best arts programming.
The 2017 documentary, titled "Etgar Keret: Based on a True Story," weaves the story of the Israeli writer's life with that of his many characters and creations, which appear in animated versions throughout the film.
