The police on Friday launched an investigation into a grisly incident in central Israel, after a pig's head was found mounted on the gate of a Ramat Hasharon synagogue.
Investigators said they have yet to determine the motive, adding that it might be related to the heated mayoral race in the city.
The role of Judaism in school and public life has been one of the issues that have divided voters and candidates. The crucial runoff that will determine the mayor for the next five years will take place on Tuesday.
Habayit Hayehudi MK Moti Yogev expressed shock and outrage over the incident.
"Placing a pig's head at the entrance to a synagogue proves that there is an incitement campaign against religion," he tweeted.
"My father arrived here from Berlin on the eve of the Holocaust and he never thought he would see something so anti-Semitic here in Israel."
Yogev called on the "the leaders of secular Zionism to do some soul-searching and see whether they crossed the line in their efforts to devoid their children of Jewish tradition."
