Former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters, a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause and a leader of the movement to boycott Israel internationally, is keeping up pressure on fellow artists to cancel planned concerts in Israel.
The latest target of Waters' campaign is American singer Lana Del Rey, who is scheduled to perform at the Meteor Festival in northern Israel in September.
A few days ago, Del Rey tweeted that while she does not necessarily agree with the politics of all countries where she performs, she generally does not take a stance on political issues and would appear as planned.
"What I can tell you is I believe music is universal and should be used to bring us together," Del Rey tweeted.
Del Rey's message drew fire from BDS activists, include Waters himself, who addressed a message to her on Facebook.
"Palestine is a unique situation in that the BDS picket line exists at the request of Palestine civil society as a whole," Waters wrote. "To respect it as I, and many others do, is a political act of support for the Palestinian people in their struggle for basic human rights."
"To cross it, conversely, is a political act in support of the apartheid state that would deny them those basic human rights," Waters continued. "Even if in your heart of hearts you believe yourself to be neutral."
"As Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu rightly says, 'If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor,'" Waters' message continued.
The English musician said he "implored" Del Rey not to perform at the Meteor Festival, asking her whether the "top dollar" she would probably be paid by the Israeli promoters was worth "abandoning [her] Palestinian brothers and sisters."
Rogers signed his Facebook message "Love, R."
