A judge in Tunisia has ordered the detention of five people suspected of throwing Molotov cocktails at two synagogues on the island of Djerba last week, during protests over price hikes.
A court spokesman said Thursday that the judge in the southeastern town of Medenine ordered the suspects to be held pending trial. The suspects are all between the ages of 19 and 22.
The spokesman said that early evidence makes authorities think the incident was not terrorism-related, as it happened during days of protests and rioting across Tunisia.
Djerba is the main home to Tunisia's Jewish community. The 2,500-year-old Ghriba synagogue, which was targeted in a 2002 extremist attack, is located on the island. The firebombs were thrown at smaller prayer sites.
