Saudi surgeons separated conjoined Gazan twins Haneen and Farah Ghanem in a 13-hour operation on Monday at the King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital in Riyadh.
However, only one of the girls, Haneen, survived the operation. The other, Farah, had been born with no lungs, a primitive heart and an undersized brain, and had been completely dependent on her sister for oxygen and nutrition, pediatric surgeon Mohammed Al-Namshan told Reuters.
On Tuesday, Haneen was able to breathe without assistance and her condition had improved, Al-Namshan said.
The twins, who were born in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip in late October, were brought to Riyadh with the support of Saudi Arabia's King Salman and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, according to their father, Ayoub Ghanem.
Local media reported that a special Saudi medical evacuation plane brought the twins and their father from Jordan to Riyadh in December.
