A Palestinian man who approached an IDF checkpoint near Kiryat Arba with a knife in his hand was shot and killed by IDF forces on Monday, the army reported.
The military said that the assailant had "a drawn knife in his hand" when the soldiers shot and killed him.
The military said no Israeli soldiers were hurt in the incident.
The shooting occurred near the settlement of Kiryat Arba in southern Judea and Samaria. The area, near the city of Hebron, is a frequent flashpoint of violence.
Palestinian Hebron resident Abed al-Maw'ti al-Qawasmi claimed however that the man had been shot by a settler, not by security forces, and had not been carrying a knife or any other weapon.
The settler "stopped his car suddenly and then fired at him," Al-Qawasmi alleged.
Also Monday, Israeli forces demolished sections of four Palestinian homes that were built illegally in the West Bank village of al-Walaje near Jerusalem, local residents said.
Amid preparations for demolition, clashes erupted between local residents and Israeli Border Police officers who forced their way into the homes to secure them for the demolition.
The brother of one of the homeowners, Abed Al-Halim Hajajleh, told Reuters that his brother had complied with a municipal order to stop the unpermitted construction.
Residents of the four homes said they would clean up the demolition rubble and remain in their homes, because they had no alternate accommodations.
