The daily newspaper Israel Hayom continues to outpace chief competitor Yedioth Ahronoth in terms of readership on weekends as well as weekdays, according to a new survey from TGI.
According to the survey, which regularly evaluates all Israeli media outlets, Israel Hayom is still on top in terms of weekday readership. Israel Hayom's exposure rate stood at 32.1% from July 2017 to June 2018, compared to the Yedioth's 29%.
Israel Hayom's average weekday readership stood at 29.8% from January-June 2018, compared to 27.3% for Yedioth. The Globes business and finance daily enjoyed a weekday readership of 5.6%, Maariv Haboker had weekday readership of 4.8%, and Haaretz had weekday readership of 4.4%.
When it comes to the weekend editions for the period of January-June 2018, (Israeli papers put out weekend supplements with the Friday paper, and no papers are published on Saturday), Israel Hayom was again in the lead with 31.7% exposure, compared to 31.3% for Yedioth Ahronoth.
However, for the yearlong period of July 2017 to June 2018, Yedioth was ahead by one-tenth of a percentage point – 32.3% compared to 32.2%.
The Haaretz weekend paper performed somewhat better than their daily edition, garnering 5.3% exposure from January-June 2018.
However, readership is still on the decline when it comes to print editions of all newspaper, the survey found. Whereas in 2015, some 58.3% of the population read a daily newspaper, that number declined to 47% in the first half of 2018. Readership of weekend papers dropped from 61.3% in the first half of 2015 to 52% in the first half of 2018.
