A Hezbollah operative died of his wounds Tuesday morning following an explosion in his home in the coastal city of Sidon in southern Lebanon.
Local authorities have said a faulty gas balloon in Bilal Hassan Abdo's home likely caused the blast.
However, Lebanese media outlets reported that other avenues of inquiry were being pursued, including whether Abdo was assassinated or was killed accidentally while assembling an explosive device.
While Hezbollah's official media channels confirmed that Abdo was a member, unlike past incidents an accusatory finger was not pointed at Israel.
On Monday, the terrorist organization's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, claimed that Israel was behind the assassination of Hamas operative and Palestinian engineer Fadi al-Batsh in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, and said Israeli agents were systematically assassinating Arab scientists.
In a speech broadcast to a campaign rally in the Shiite Beirut neighborhood of Dahiyeh ahead of Lebanon's elections next month, Nasrallah said Israel was hunting academics down around the world.
"[Israel] cannot stand that there are Arab and Muslim minds that identify with the Arab-nationalist ideology, and that is why it took out scientists from Iran, from Tunisia and also Lebanese scientists," Nasrallah told supporters.
"The criminal Israeli aggression is manifested in the assassinations and targeted killings that are part of the Zionist enemy's ongoing and organized program against the opposition."
